A used hybrid can save you a lot on fuel, but only if the battery and history are sound. Use these seven simple checks before you pay a deposit.

A used hybrid can cut your fuel bill a lot, but a weak battery or a hidden accident can wipe out that saving. Take this checklist with you when you view a car.
1. Ask for the hybrid battery health
The battery is the most expensive part of a hybrid. Ask for a battery health report or a recent dealer check, and watch the battery bars on the dashboard. Uneven bars can mean a tired battery.
2. Check the auction sheet
Most imported hybrids come with an auction grade sheet. Compare the grade, mileage and any damage notes with the car in front of you. If the seller has no sheet, ask why.
3. Verify the mileage
Compare the odometer with the service records and the auction sheet. A very low number for the age of the car deserves a second look.
4. Look for signs of accident repair
Check that panel gaps are even, the paint colour matches on every panel, and the bolts under the bonnet are not scratched. Do this in daylight.
5. Test the hybrid system on a drive
On a test drive the car should move off quietly on the battery, the petrol engine should start smoothly, and the warning lights should stay off. Listen for unusual humming or vibration.
6. Check the air conditioner and cooling
Hybrid cars rely on a healthy cooling system, and the air conditioner is often tied to the battery cooling fan. Run the cold air at full power for several minutes.
7. Confirm the paperwork
Check the registration book, the owner history and that there is no outstanding lease or loan on the car. Make sure the chassis number matches the documents.
Final tip
Never pay a deposit before you have seen the car in person and checked the papers. If you are unsure, ask a trusted mechanic to look at it with you.
